My brother and his wife have lived in Belize about 3 years. They live ~4.5 miles north of San Pedro Town on Ambergris Caye which is the largest island off the coast of mainland Belize. In a nutshell, they ended up there ’cause they were both burnt out with their jobs so they sold a lot of their crap, and bought a house and an acre of land…online and basically sight unseen.
Three years later: they have a functioning business, a firm grasp of how to get things done on ‘island time’, and an enthusiasm for their new life. It has been awesome to witness them grow a business, adapt to a new culture and environment, and ultimately be successful in taking a big jump into the unknown.
Me? I am not much of an island person as I prefer big, open landscapes which are generally devoid of people. My first visit to Belize was in 2008. Although I enjoyed it, I struggled with being there for 10 days!
Flash forward to a new mindset in 2010, and a month long visit in February. A very welcome break from winter, and a great place to sit around and rehab my busted (but mending) broken leg. This time I was much more flexible in my attitude and enjoyed most of my time there. Goals for the trip were simple: Help my brother with the business when I could, rehab my leg, and try to embrace the ocean.
So…all went well. Got some work done in the greenhouses, ran errands for the grocery store, and did some deliveries for tourists. I did well with rehab as I was pretty dedicated in terms of going to the gym, riding a beater single speed on the beaches, and towards the end of my time there actually running again. Lastly, the ocean was finally embraced by getting my Open Water Scuba Certification and doing 5 dives, one of which was outside the Reef to about 65 ft. Pretty cool stuff and a nice skill to add to the quiver.
