In no particular order, the following are some commitments and ideas that I am pursuing as 2010 winds down and no doubt will continue into 2011.
1)Utah County Highpoints
I’ve been up quite a few of the Utah County Highpoints but have never made a conscious effort to tick them all. This will be a fun way to see more of the state.
2)Nevada County Highpoints
I’ve poked around a fair portion of Nevada, but much of the state is still a mystery to me. Reaching the HP’s of each County will expose me to more of the Silver State as well as give me a chance to review some questionable areas that were a part of my attempted Great Basin Traverse from a few years back, which I’d like to tackle again in the near future. Plus, with 85% of the state being public land, NV is an easy place to Man Van Camp and not get hassled.
3)Continued Dappling with Ultramarathon Distances
For my 2010 Endurance Challenge, I completed a Rim to Rim to Rim run/hike of the Grand Canyon. Starting at the North Rim beneath a full Harvest Moon, I ran/hiked 24 miles to the South Rim, then turned around and ran/hiked back. All said, 48 miles in 13 hrs…only ~7 hrs off record pace, but a happy accomplishment for me nonetheless. Having completed the Rim to Rim to Rim, my mind is admittedly churning out other 40-60 mile run/hikes in pretty places.
4) 57 Summits Project
I also plan to make some inroads with regard to the 57 summits in the Lower 48 that have a prominence of at least 5,000 ft. AKA America’s 57 Ultra. Contrived? Absolutely! But again, a great way to see a lot of good country and improve my fitness. I think I have done ~11 of them just by chance, so with some focus and good conditions, I should make some decent progress this season. Mountains with this much elevation gain are incredibly interesting…huge range of flora, fauna, and my favorites…big views and long ridgelines.
